Gurgaon Pubs Tap Into Euro Culture, To Make Their Own Beer Now To Suit Your TasteBy yogisharma, Section Gurgaon News
Forget the can, and certainly the bottle. You can now take a swig from the barrel.
Come October, and a new trend in tippling will be established in Gurgaon for those who are connoisseurs of beer, and yet indulgent of the belly. Known as micro brewpubs, two of its kind will open shop at the Ambience Mall and in Galaxy Hotel, just off the Gurgaon Expressway. In concept, these pubs will brew the beer on the spot, adjusting the quality of the brew -- in flavour, bitterness and viscosity -- according to the needs of the customer. The focus will be on the ale's style rather than on its mass appeal. ![]() Ready For Cheers : Breweries at Hotel Galaxy Germany, which has a tradition of such brewpubs or brauhaus, is lending technology to Delhi-based Rockman Breweries. Two German companies, Lowenbrau Buttenheim and Kaspar Schulz, will collaborate with Rockman. The other Indian company to dabble in this independently will be the Galaxy Hotel. The main attraction of these micro brewpubs, proprietors said, will be to serve fresh and non-pasteurised beer, unlike the bottled ones that contain preservatives. Rockman's managing director C S Agarwal said, "The ingredients behind the beer will include hops, malt, yeast and water, and customers will be able to watch their ale brew." Haryana is the first state in the country to have opened its doors to brewpubs, courtesy its new excise policy that allows microbreweries for an additional Rs 2.5 lakh as annual license fee, said the state's deputy excise and taxation commissioner Ashok Sharma. He said, "Several hotels, bars and pubs are interested in serving freshly-brewed beer. Microbreweries and beer gardens will be a hit in Gurgaon." Click On "Full Story" For More...
Other states also wish to cash in and those like Punjab, Maharashtra and Goa might soon change their respective excise and taxation policies to accommodate this trend. In Europe, microbreweries have existed for hundreds of years and are classified as those which produce less, cater to a small area, to the informed beer drinker, and often have pubs attached to the breweries.
Adding to European technology here, will be home-made Indian imagination. Rockman introduces a copper device, something familiar to a vending machine, filled with warm water. The beer will be made to flow out of this if one prefers it at a particular temperature. The ale can also be served directly from the barrel. If it is beer and football in Europe, it is beer and cricket at the Galaxy Hotel's pub -- sofas that look like the crescent of the keeper's gloves, umpire-hat ice buckets et al, said senior executive H N Nautyal.
