Country's First District e-Court To Be Launched At KarkardoomaBy akansha, Section GN
On February 8, with the launch of a district e-court, the Karkardooma court will take a pioneering step towards speeding up justice delivery processes in the country. Delhi High Court Chief Justice A P Shah will inaugurate the first district-level e-court in the country.
With e-courts, the entire volume of files in the fast-track courts will be digitised. A touchscreen will be installed on the dais of the presiding judge. LCD screens will be installed in the e-court, on which any document can be viewed with the help of a document visualiser.Just like searching the Net, a document can be hunted down by choosing to look up any case by date, name or section. Legal experts expect e-courts to revolutionise the recording of evidence, as it will not be necessary for witnesses to be physically present to testify. "It will enable the e-court to record evidence of the witnesses who are incapable of being present in the court due to health reasons, old age or being out of country," an official in Karkardooma court said. The district e-court is already connected to all of the city's jails and courts. Officials said efforts are underway to link e-courts with the forensic lab in Rohini, government hospitals in the districts under the jurisdiction of the Karkardooma court and all police stations in the city through video-conferencing. Considerable time will thus be saved, as forensic lab officials, police officials and government doctors can testify through video-conferencing studios from their respective workplaces. This move will also allow more hightech methods to be employed in the way cases are fought. Lawyers can bring their laptops to the courtroom and make their argument with the aid of powerpoint presentations.
PAPERWORK OUT Paperwork, inextricably associated with courts, may be a thing of the past. Lawyers can file petitions, cases and applications online through the e-filing system. Accessing information is expected to become hassle-free, as lawyers can inspect court files of their cases online. A large part of the success will, however, depend on the execution of the project. After digitisation, the state of New York prides itself on hearing three million cases a year. The Computer Committee of the High Court, which headed this project, would hope for a similar transformation by ensuring quicker disposal of the city's huge backlog of cases.
