Come April and Gurgaon's most popular mode of transport is set to disappear from the Mehrauli- Gurgaon Road.
In a bid to facilitate smooth flow of traffic, the Gurgaon police have decided to ban cycle- rickshaws on this road from April 1. If the move is successful, they plan to restrict rickshaws to the old city.
Most people in Gurgaon use rickshaws to visit the dozen- odd malls on the road.
By banning rickshaws, the police hope to avoid the long pile- up of vehicles that block traffic on the road connecting the cyber city to the Capital.
" During weekends, shoppers congest this busy road. We have received several complaints about rickshaws causing traffic jams on the road," Gurgaon police commissioner S. S. Deswal said. The police recently had a meeting with the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon ( MCG) where it was decided to make the road " rickshaw- and cycle- free". " We expect resistance from rickshawpullers, but we have to make the flow of traffic smooth on important roads," Deswal added.
