Rickshaws To Exit Mehrauli- Gurgaon Road in April

By ugesh sarkar, Section Gurgaon News

Come April and Gurgaon's most popular mode of transport is set to disappear from the Mehrauli- Gurgaon Road.

In a bid to facilitate smooth flow of traffic, the Gurgaon police have decided to ban cycle- rickshaws on this road from April 1. If the move is successful, they plan to restrict rickshaws to the old city.

Most people in Gurgaon use rickshaws to visit the dozen- odd malls on the road.

By banning rickshaws, the police hope to avoid the long pile- up of vehicles that block traffic on the road connecting the cyber city to the Capital.

" During weekends, shoppers congest this busy road. We have received several complaints about rickshaws causing traffic jams on the road," Gurgaon police commissioner S. S. Deswal said. The police recently had a meeting with the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon ( MCG) where it was decided to make the road " rickshaw- and cycle- free". " We expect resistance from rickshawpullers, but we have to make the flow of traffic smooth on important roads," Deswal added.

The rickshaw- pullers, set to lose their turf in New Gurgaon, were unhappy at the move. " How will I feed my family? Old Gurgaon is not that lucrative. What will I do after my only means of livelihood is snatched away?" Zariyat Khan, a rickshaw- puller, said.

Store- owners at the malls welcomed the move. " As traffic will move much faster, it will be easier to move from one mall to another," Sharbani Mukherjee, a shop- owner at the MGF mall, said.

Transport experts, however, felt banning rickshaws was regressive, especially since cities such as Berlin, Paris and Tokyo were switching over to this mode of transport.

" It is incorrect to say rickshaws cause traffic jams," an expert said.

Gurgaon Traffic Police did incorrect survey on MG Road for traffic jams. In Gurgaon most of the places, Traffic Jam happened due to incorrect or unauthorized vehicle parkings. Even on MG Road, people are commuting with Merc / BMW but not interested to park their vehicle inside the Mall Parking ( They are giving the excuse the Parking is not available, why can they walk 100-200 Mtrs. Because Parking is available but wants to park into same mall where they want to do the shopping). But Gurgaon Police is crucifying the Rickshaw pullers.

If Gurgaon Police Start towing and ticketing all illegally parked cars  then Traffic Jam automatically resolved.

very correct, Rickshaw was the only way to commute on this road for many people. why in poor country like india cars gets first priority, and pedistrian and rickshaw the last
