Gurgaon Draws Master Plan For Rainwater Harvesting

By akansha, Section Gurgaon News

In order to tide over the perpetual water crisis, Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is preparing a plan to set up rainwater harvesting project for the whole city. MCG, in collaboration with the civil engineering department of Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi, is drawing a master plan to identify places in the city where rechargeable pits could be constructed.

The master plan is expected to be ready by this year end. So far, 50% of the mapping work has already been completed and 41 places have been identified where pits could be constructed. An official of MCG said that work on eight such spots have already started. These places include Sikander Pur Chowk, Biodiversity Park, Sukhrali Lake and areas where offices of the deputy commissioner and the municipal corporation are located.

Coordinator of the project, Prof Gauhar Mahmood of the civil engineering department, Jamia Millia Islamia, said that under the rainwater harvesting master plan, every inch of land be it industrial area, park, residential area or biodiversity park is being measured to see if there are prospects for setting up such projects.

The plan will also provide technical inputs on various aspects related to water harvesting like water quality, type of construction to be done based on quantity of rainfall and size of pits.

Though such projects will be mainly taken up in areas under public domain, each and every sector and various societies are also covered under this project. Many housing societies have already started rainwater harvesting projects. DLF City has around 17 recharge pits in their premises.

Once the plan is ready, the next step will be to construct the recharge pits, informed R K Khullar, MCG commissioner.

Prof Gauhar said, "The groundwater level in the Millennium City is going down by six feet a year on an average. The annual rate of depletion is predicted to touch 10 feet in the coming years because of the rising demand for water due to increase in population and fast pace of construction work.

For residents of Gurgaon, water crisis is at its worst, and they are forced to entirely depend on groundwater for their daily needs. Residents are extracting three times more groundwater than what is allowed by the administration.

NGO 'I am Gurgaon' is also working in tandem with MCG to create awareness about the project. Latika Thukral of the NGO said that her organization in collaboration with MCG, residents welfare associations and corporate houses would launch a campaign next month to generate awareness on how to save water and on rainwater harvesting.
